Safely Deploying Tire Deflation Devices

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for law enforcement officers and it is about deploying tire deflation devices safely.  

In many circumstances, a tire deflation device can be a good option to ensure the safety of the public. When you’re deploying such a device, take steps to ensure your safety too.  

Vehicle pursuits are among the most dangerous activities we engage in. They can endanger the general public. They can also be dangerous for us.  Tire deflation devices, or spike strips, can be an effective tool to end pursuits. But their use is not without risk. Way too many officers are hurt and killed deploying spike strips.  

Some officers get a lesson on how to access and physically deploy the spikes. Some officers don’t get any training at all. But we should be doing much more. We need to get better about communication. We need to get officers thinking about where and when to deploy spikes. And where NOT to deploy them.  

Use the radio. Communicate with your dispatcher, your supervisor, and the people directly involved in the pursuit. Make sure they know what you’re doing and where you’re doing it. Make sure everyone is on the same page before you deploy a tire deflation device. 

Consider the deployment location carefully. Anticipate that the pursued driver will try to avoid the spikes. Consider deploying the spikes in an unexpected location. Like at the crest of a hill or the far end of a bridge.  

Look for a deployment location that offers cover. And an escape route. Consider where the pursued driver might go to avoid the spikes. And also consider how the pursued driver could use the vehicle as a weapon against you. If the pursued driver wanted to intentionally strike you, would it be possible based on where you will be standing?
