Changing Jail Culture Reduces Violence

Gordon Graham
Category: Corrections

Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for my friends in corrections. I’d like to talk with you about reducing violence by changing the culture within your facility.

There’s been a major shift in corrections toward emphasizing rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. In a 2023 study, the Vera Institute of Justice found that focusing on rehabilitation can reduce violence within a facility. I’d like to offer some ideas to help improve your facility’s culture.

When officers and civilians alike treat inmates with dignity and respect, this improves the well-being of everyone in the facility.

First, get your inmates’ friends and family members actively engaged in their progress and case management. This can help inmates succeed while in custody and smooth their transition back into their communities. Regular contact with loved ones may also reduce the likelihood of violent behavior.

Second, as much as possible, strive for normalcy in the living environment. To a large degree, life inside your facility should reflect what’s going on outside. This includes having a rigorous daily schedule for inmates to follow, which can reduce violence and rule breaking. Structure also promotes accountability, which will benefit inmates when they re-enter society.

Third, emphasize restorative practices over punishment. This can help resolve conflict in ways that prioritize individual accountability, peer support, and positive reinforcement. It also fosters empathy, responsibility, and peaceful conflict resolution.

Fourth, consider mentorship. Leverage the experience of your older inmates by having them work with correctional staff to support younger inmates’ growth.

Finally, remember your employees need training and support as well. As agents of change, your staff lead inmates and one another. When officers and civilians alike treat inmates with dignity and respect, this improves the well-being of everyone in the facility.

Folks, the old days of “locking inmates up and throwing away the key” are over. Embrace ideas for change and cultural transformation. Doing so will improve the lives of everyone living and working within the walls of your facility.

And that’s Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Until next time, Gordon Graham, signing off.
